A tourist has defaced the Colosseum in Rome by carving her name into the monument using a coin. The police confiscated the coin and arrested the woman after she carved “Sabrina 2017.”
According to the police report, she is facing charges for “aggravated damage to a building of historical and artistic interest.”
Nearly seven million people visit the Colosseum each year so the fact that these incidents occur is not entirely surprising although it’s always disappointing. In January the Colosseum had an incident where two men attempted to break in after hours and ended up falling 13 feet. One of the men sustained injuries such as a hip break.
Authorities have considered changing up the access to create a buffer zone around the monument in an attempt to cut back on some of the vandalism opportunities.
