Iceland has become the first country to ever demand equal pay for women. Iceland actually ranks high as far as countries go on gender equality, and yet women there still earn up to 18 percent less than men on average.
The new law is going into effect for both public and private firms and requires any company with more than 25 to obtain a certificate stating that they will pay the same wages “regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexuality, or nationality.”
Iceland has also required that 40 percent of employees on company boards be women when there are 50 or people on the board. By the year 2022, the country is planning to have completely done away with the gender wage gap.
This news comes right after International Women’s Day where many women marched in demand of equal pay.
