Cape Cod is expecting an influx of great white sharks this summer. This is the second year in the row that the shark population has been growing in the area.
In 2014 there were only 80 sharks in the water off Massachusettes, but by 2016 there were 147 according to a counting done by scientists flying above the water in a plane. They believe that the repopulating is taking place in the beach areas near Cape Cod.
While shark attacks are relatively rare, based on the current numbers the scientists say that a shark attack is imminent. Greg Skomal from the marine fisheries division put it into perspective.
“It’s not if, it’s when, in terms of somebody being fatally attacked. We’ve got seals being eaten within 100 meters [330 feet] of surfers. Think about that.”
