Hotels.com is testing out a new app that would provide the opportunity for more hotels to use electronic keys via smartphones.
Some hotel companies have already been trying out this technology, but the apps version would extend the opportunity to many other hotels.
The app is currently in the trial phase, which means that it would not be widely available until March of 2017. It will first be targeted at the European market, where they will be partnering with the Sweden-based SALTO Systems to do so.
Hilton first started its digital check-in in 2014 and then in 2015 launched its Digital Key feature which allows guests to open their hotel rooms with their phones and not have to stop by the front desk at all to do so.
Hyatt Hotels will also be debuting a similar feature at some point in the near future.
