For a long time the standard in Las Vegas was that as long as a visitor was spending money gambling, they were eligible for free drinks. But now some of the casinos are testing out some other methods for determining when someone should actually be drinking for free or not.
Both Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts are trying something new with the poker machines that are actually on the bar. Instead of just offering the players free drinks, now the machines will keep track of how much they’re playing or winning, and alert the bartender when their performance is high enough to get comped.
What they’re trying to avoid of course, is people who are just sitting at the bar getting a ton of free drinks, while occasionally but not actively playing the machines.
MGM released a statement about the change saying that “the new technology has eliminated the guessing game for bartenders about how many drinks each guest is eligible to receive based on play.”
Caesars says that the new system allows the casinos “to offer complimentary beverages to those gamers who choose max play at our video poker bar top units.”
