Commercial supersonic flights over land have been banned since 1971, as the government deemed the sonic boom too noisy. A single sonic boom can travel up to 25 miles and is powerful enough to shatter windows, that’s why the Concorde is out of commission. The Quesst X-Plane, a supersonic passenger plane is in development by NASA. Lockheed Martin won a $20m contract to build an initial version. NASA will incorporate advanced “Boom reduction” technology. The “Boom” will be replaced by a “Thump” and the plane will travel about 200 mph faster than a 747. So for example, a flight from New York to London would take 4 hours instead of 7 hours.
