On Thursday workers at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport voted to go on strike before the Thanksgiving holiday. It’s been reported that 500 workers that work as baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, janitors, and wheelchair attendants have agreed to go on strike after they tried to organize with the help of the union. They are seeking a $15 per hour wage.
A union spokeswoman named Izabela Miltko-Ivkovich said that the strike “will definitely take place in the coming days.”
Tom Balanoff the president of the Service Employees International Union Local 1 said that the employees are trying to “get the powers that be to hear their voice.”
“They don’t expect to shut the airport down. That’s not what they’re trying to do. Oh, there will be disruption.”
While they don’t know exactly when the strike is going to take place, they do think that it will happen sometime before the Thanksgiving holiday. This year the Thanksgiving travel is expected to be extremely busy, so if the strike coincides with that it could potentially cause some delays.
