The south sidewalk of the White House has been a favorite spot for tourists to come and take photos, but now the area will be shut down to visitors due to increasing security concerns. Several people have managed to break into the White House yard by getting over the fence and the Secret Service is worried about it.
In 2014 a man jumped the fence and actually walked into the White House, and in March of this year a man got over the fence and was walking around on the lawn for 15 minutes before he was stopped.
In 2015 the security was increased by setting certain hours and adding spikes to the fence, but it does not seem to be enough. The Washington Post spoke out against the decision.
“The loss this time is not just of access to a sidewalk that offered a glorious view of the White House but further erosion of the openness that is — or should be — a hallmark of American democracy.”
