A website called Keepbearswild.org has been launched to allow people to track bears in Yosemite National Park. Last year there were 28 car accidents involving bears, some of which were fatal for the bears.
Of course, the safety of human visitors is of concern as well since the park sees a million visitors each year. Ryan Leahy, a wildlife biologist and project leader at the park shared his enthusiasm about the project.
“I think people are going to be blown away. It’s our responsibility to keep bears wild.”
The website will use GPS for real time bear tracking. Ryan added:
“Our job is to mitigate the availability of human food to bears to prevent that behavior from becoming ingrained. It’s bear management, but it’s mostly human management.”
