It’s possible that virtual reality will at some point play a part in hotel and other bookings, in that people could put on some glasses and check out the digs they’re considering. Expedia is one company that’s considering bringing this option into the mainstream.
Arthur Chapin, Expedia’s Senior Vice President of Product and Design at the Singapore location says:
“If you’re going to make the decision of [booking] a cruise, wouldn’t it be cool if you could check out the ship [virtually] before you spend that much money?”
When wearing the headset it would be possible to walk out on balconies and open doors, allowing people to get a pretty accurate look at each hotel room.
Last year Expedia did a study that found that millennials don’t like being met with surprises when they arrive at hotel rooms that they booked ahead of time.
Gary Morrison, the senior vice president and head of retail at Expedia said:
“I think it’s not that we’re getting less adventurous but a sense of risk aversion is growing. The sense that ‘I need to know that it’s going to be authentic, I need to know that people are going to look favorably on it.’”
