Uber drivers will be joining the Fight For 15 protest on Tuesday in an effort to demand a $15 minimum wage. They will be doing so alongside fast-food workers, home care aids, and airport employees.
In the past, Uber has said that their drivers make around $19 an hour, but that does not take into account the expenses that the drivers themselves have to cover, which is pretty much everything.
Driving an Uber, of course, is considered gig work unlike those other jobs, which means that they are not eligible for making overtime money or getting any sick days. Some people feel that gig work is going to be the way of the future in certain markets, but that if that will be so then there has to be some sort of support system for the contractors in place.
The protest is going to take place on Tuesday. Some Uber drivers are planning to idle their cars, while others are planning to march on the “Day of Disruption.”
