U.S. airlines bumped fewer passengers in 2017 than ever before. Or at least since the Transportation Department started keeping track of those numbers in 1995.
Between the months of January and June this year only one out of 19,000 passengers were bumped from U.S. airlines. People end up getting bumped due to the fact that most airlines overbook their flights to ensure that they still full.
When they run out of room and end up overbooked, they start offering vouchers for people who are willing to take a different flight. Spirit Airlines currently has the worst rate, bumping one out of 10,000 people.
United recently announced a new plan to let people know five days in advance if they were booked on a potentially full flight. Rescheduling a flight within 24 hours of departure could get them a $250 voucher.
