Earlier this month some current and former employees of the Transportation Security Administration were busted smuggling drugs in an ongoing drug ring. The current reported numbers are around 20 tons of cocaine worth $100 million over a 20 year period of time.
The federal security director for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands Jose Baquero released a statement about the arrest of the 12 TSA members.
“This investigation was initiated by TSA as part of its efforts to address employee misconduct and specific insider threat vulnerabilities. TSA has zero tolerance for employees engaged in criminal activity to facilitate contraband smuggling.”
The smuggling ring reportedly started in 1998. If convicted the people involved will each face around ten years in prison.
