A startup called Boom Technology wants to change the current state of travel and make supersonic jet travel a mainstream travel option. The company has dreams of launching an aircraft with 45 seats and cruising speeds of 1,451 miles per hour, with prices between $5,000 and $10,000.
One issue that the startup might face with these plans is turning a profit and making the whole thing worth it, since supersonic jets are not very fuel efficient and it’s hard enough for any small airplanes to make enough money.
Marty St. George, a JetBlue Airways executive and industry veteran explained.
“I have no problem seeing the demand for this airplane. The issue is can you do it and make the numbers work?”
The company is planning to address this by starting with a flight from New York to London which would only take three hours, assuming that this would interest some corporate travelers. They’ve already created a deal with the manufacturing division of Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic division Spaceship Co., which will give them access to some of their design and engineering teams.
