The Economist’s Intelligence Unit has shared its listing of the most expensive cities in the world and Singapore is still at the top of the list.
To figure this out they take into account things like goods and services in each town. They found that Singapore is five percent more expensive than Hong Kong in the number two spot, and 20 percent more expensive than New York city.
Singapore leaps ahead in how expensive it is thanks to how expensive it is to own a car there. A Volkswagen Golf that costs $20,000 in the United States will run over $90,000 over there. There are high taxes on cars as well as fees required to be paid by the government.
The public transportation system is quite effective, but many people seek out purchases like cars as status symbols.
