The known Wonders of the World are extremely popular tourist destinations, but apparently, there are seven others that people don’t know as much about. Locals in the area were keeping quiet about the sites, but infrastructure changes has made them more accessible.
Some of the sites include temple complexes in India that are over 1,000 years old, sites in Colombia that are older than Machu Picchu, and a sacred city in Sri Lanka. The city in Sri Lanka was kept secret over local politics, but things are now changing.
The popularity of some ancient sites has been so overwhelming that it’s possible they will at some point be shut down. Opening others could help spread out the visitors, or it might encourage a similar influx that’s hard to maintain. Machu Picchu is having a hard time controlling the influx of visitors, and even towns like Venice to Barcelona are experiencing too much tourism. There certainly seems to be a fine balance between keeping the economy up and being overrun with visitors.
