There has been quite a lot of drama with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices catching on fire, which has been a particular concern on flights. Different airlines were taking different approaches for how best to handle the devices, but now they have been banned across the board by the Department of Transportation.
The order was issued as an emergency, and deemed the devices a “forbidden hazardous material.” The Department of Transportation issued a statement saying that passengers with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device are no longer allowed to carry it anywhere on their person or luggage. The device cannot be in carry-on baggage, or in checked baggage, and it is not even allowed to be transported as air cargo.
The new regulation went into effect on Saturday for all flights coming from, or going to the United States. Anyone who is caught breaking the rule could be faced with fines, as well as having the device taken away from them on the spot. Previously passengers were allowed to have the device on them if it was off the plane, but not anymore.
Last week Samsung announced that they would be discontinuing production of the devices in entirety.
