Late last week, Nintendo launched Pokemon Go, an augmented reality game that allows players the opportunity to physically travel around their hometown (or travel destination) and scoop up a whole mess of Pokemon. At a glance, this might seem like complete kid stuff, but Pokemon Go has taken mobile phones and social media by storm as people across the world have wandered out of their homes in order to explore the world around them.
Not only has Nintendo stock jumped 25 percent in the wake of the game’s release, but Pokemon Go has also been popping up in every conceivable place. Take, for instance, the way someone managed to mess with Westboro Baptist Church using the game.
More than anything, though, the benefit of Pokemon Go has been in getting gamers of all types (and all ages) out into their city. Sure, there have been some unexpected twists, but Pokemon Go has provided a thin veneer of fantasy that’s helped fledgling travelers of all ages to get out and poke around their environment. If you need a little incentive to get outdoors (or you’re looking to entice the family), then Pokemon Go may just be the perfect summer solution.
