India seems to be one of more dangerous places to take a selfie. Or perhaps the sites where people want to take selfies are more dangerous. In 2015 there were 27 reported selfie-related deaths in the world, and about half of them were in India.
Those deaths occured while posing in front of train, taking a selfie as a boat was tipping over, a cliff giving out, and slipping down the steps at the Taj Majal.
In Mumbai they actually created some “no-selfie zones” after a couple died after being swept out to sea while taking a selfie.
The selfie trend isn’t likely to end as long as rear facing smartphone camera exists. Safety is the best precaution. There’s no word on whether using a selfie stick is more or less dangerous than taking a traditional selfie, but just always remain aware of your surroundings either way.
