Parisian authorities are considering building a bulletproof wall around the Eiffel Tower in an effort to make the area more secure.
Building the wall would cost $22 million and is a part of a larger plan to increase security in the area over the next 15 years which will cost around $320 million overall. The wall will be eight feet high and be able to withstand the pressure of a truck trying to ram into it.
In the past two years over 200 people have died due to terrorist attacks in France, and busy tourist areas tend to be popular spots of attack. Naturally, people are worried about its aesthetic lack of appeal.
The deputy mayor Jean-François Martins spoke at a press conference in Paris about the need, referring to it as “perimeter” as opposed to a wall.
“Sadly, the risk of terrorism hasn’t gone away. It’s not a wall, it’s an aesthetic perimeter.”
