New York is bringing back the floating forest that first opened last June. The Swale barge was open daily for 300 people to come aboard and pick their own fresh fruits and vegetables.
This year the design will be even better. Swale is revealing a new barge with “tons of soil, gravel, and lava rocks to create a more park-like atmosphere.” In addition to last year’s plants like asparagus and raspberries this year there will be eight apple trees and 400 perennial edible plants.
This year not only are people still allowed to walk away with free food, they’ll also get seeds and recipe books to continue the fun at home.
The floating forest’s founder Mary Mattingly said that:
“The future of Swale was uncertain as the barge headed upstate to over-winter last November. We have been able to fully realize the vision of creating a floating food forest and showing New Yorkers a new and surprising way to connect to nature to revive and thrive.”
