A New York-based non-profit called The Regional Plan Association wants to create a trail that would connect the state to Connecticut and New Jersey. Doing so would create 1,650-miles of trails that could be used for hiking and biking.
Based on where the non-profit wants to place the trail, some eight million residents would be within half a mile of an entrance. Many parks already exist in these states, but if they were better-connected people could travel by foot (or bike) more. This is good for the environment, and it could also be good for the economy.
A report stated their interest in creating this sort of a thing.
“Connecting the region’s precious open spaces together and to our communities via a network of trails would catalyze economic development, and boost recreational opportunities, improving health and quality of life while enhancing the biodiversity of our natural systems.”
