Mexico welcomed a record 35 million tourists in 2016, which is a nine percent increase from 2015. Visitor spending also went up 10.4 percent.
The tourism board’s CEO, Lourdes Berho, released a statement about the increase.
“Mexico’s sustained, fast growth is a testament to the incredible quality and diversity in our tourism offering and the hard work for the entire industry, both internationally and domestically. Plans are already underway to ensure 2017 builds upon these achievements and that Mexico continues to welcome all visitors and give them reasons to come back again and again.”
Over nine million Mexicans are employed by the country’s tourism industry. The Mexico Tourism Board is hoping to welcome 50 million international visitors by the year 2021.
