Lonely Planet is getting ready to release a book called Secret Marvels of the World, focusing on just that. The book will be out on August 15, and point out places to go and things to see that are generally overlooked.
For example, the book points out that you can view the Berlin wall from certain places in Los Angeles, Japan, and Iceland. It tells how to find a ghost town in Namibia’s Namib Desert, and where there is a lake that drowned a forest in the Tian Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan after an earthquake formed it in 1911.
The locations mentioned in the book are curated from many contributors, and are not as likely to appear in other guidebooks.
