The Mall of America is the largest mall in the world, and for the first time it will close for the day on Thanksgiving to give its employees some time off to be with their families. This goes against popular trends of starting the Black Friday shopping early, which many stores take full advantage.
The mall, which is located in Bloomington Minnesota, has announced that it will be closed over the holiday, but it is giving its stores the option of reopening if they want to. The mall has 520 different stores, 1,200 people who work directly for the mall, and a massive 13,000 people who work for the stores in the mall.
Last year the mall opened at 6PM on Thanksgiving and stayed open through the night for the pre Black Friday rush, but that doesn’t seem to be the case this year.
According to Jill Renslow, the mall’s senior vice president of marketing and business development:
“We’ve been talking about this for months, looking at the numbers, looking at the pros and the cons. We’re excited to give this day back to our employees so they can celebrate with their families.”
The mall plans to open as regular 5AM on Friday for the Black Friday shoppers.
