The Hokutosei train started service in 1988 and offered service connecting Tokyo to Sapporo, but it was shut down in 2015 when people started taking faster flights instead. But the train was well liked for its sleeper car arrangements, so it has been recreated as hostel called Train Hostel Hokutosei.
The entire hostel is themed like the sleeper train, and the bunk beds, reading lights, and the door to the dining car were actually taken from the car itself. The rest has been recreated in its likeness. The dining area looks just like a dining car, and the lounge area has couches that face each other just like on a train.
The hostel can hold 78 people in its sleeper style beds and rooms are available from $22 each night. It also offers two “private” rooms that have a curtain that separates them.
