A hotel in Italy is trying to increase tourism rates and increase the country’s low birth rates at the same time. There are ten different hotels in the town of Assisi taking part in this plan, and will give people a free stay if they return with a birth certificate showing that they gave birth nine months after their first stay there.
The Fertility Room project is being run by local tour operators in the Umbria region, without the endorsement of local officials.
The participating hotels include: Agriturismo Basaletto, Agriturismo Casa Faustina, Agriturismo Le Mandrie di San Paolo, Hotel Cristallo, Dal Moro Assisi Gallery Hotel, Hotel Dei Priori, Hotel Fontebella, Hotel Il Castello, Hotel Windsor Savoia and Villamena.
Some of those hotels are offering a refund for the night’s stay when the conception took place, while others are offering a free future stay for one night.
In 2015 Italy reported having the lowest birth rate in over 150 years. This initiative states that the low birth rate is “one of the most significant problems that social policies will have to face in the coming years.
