India has reported its first cases of the Zika virus. The World Health Organization reports that three people within the past 18 months have been diagnosed within India’s Gujarat State.
A statement reads:
“The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare – Government of India (MoHFW) reported three laboratory-confirmed cases of Zika virus disease in Bapunagar area, Ahmedabad District, Gujarat State, India.”
Two of the three people that have been diagnosed with the virus were women who have since delivered healthy babies that did not experience birth defects due to the virus. Both of the women were at the same hospital when they were diagnosed with the virus.
India has now set up an “Inter-Ministerial Task Force” to monitor cases of the virus.
