India has lightened up their liquor ban. The ban prohibited alcohol sales within a third of a mile from a highway, but this affected many hotels, bars, and restaurants. Many of the locations had to shut down after the sale of alcohol was prohibited. Now the Supreme Court has partially lifted the ban.
The intention behind the ban was a safety measure. While overall consumption is low in India, the people who drink seem to drink a lot. According to a study by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bengaluru, 21 percent of people with brain injuries following car crashes had been drinking. Of those people, 90 percent of them had consumed within three hours before the crash.
Many people in the area were shocked by the severity of the ban even though the concept had good origins.
