Iceland is preparing for what is expected to be its busiest tourist season yet. The summer of 2017 is going to be one for the books.
One news outlet says that the country is going from “under 500,000 in 2010 to more than 2.4 million tourists expected this year.”
Iceland went through a recession in 2008 and started to get more attention from the rest of the world after the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted in 2010. Adding to that the popularity of Instagram travel photos and Game of Thrones filming there, and the country has been getting a lot more attention than ever.
The increase in tourists has meant that airlines like WOW Air have started to offer more flights to U.S. and Canadian visitors. The Iceland stopover has also become more popular for people on their way to other European countries.
