Hurricane Matthew has had quite the wake, but some of it has turned out to be a good thing. In South Carolina the storm managed to unearth some cannon balls from the Civil War that have been sitting there and potentially dangerous.
The Civil War of course civil began at nearby Fort Sumter in 1861, so the cannon balls have been sitting there undetected for quite some time.
The ammunition was discovered in the sand at Folly beach on Sunday and a bomb squad had to report to the scene to do some cleanup. They warned residents in the area that they might hear some booms at they did so. Since the tides were coming back up at the time of their discovery the cannon balls could not be dealt with right away.
The Folly Beach mayor Richard Beck discovered the cannon balls walking on the beach.
“I knew they were cannonballs. One of them had a very distinct hole in it that went directly into it. Just knowing a little bit about the Civil War, I know that they put fuses in cannonballs for them to explode when they desired them to.”
Hurricane Matthew is the most intense storm that has hit the U.S. in more than a decade, and it took many lives in Haiti before making its way to the U.S. east coast. Thousands of people were evacuated from a few different states and South Carolina saw some intense flooding.
