Anyone with plans to visit Honolulu anytime soon should know about a new law that forbids people from texting while they cross the street. The Distracted Walking Law says no looking at screens of any kind once you’ve stepped off the curb.
Starting October 25, the first time fine will be between $15-35. The second time someone is fined for crossing the street on their phone the fine will go up to between $35-75, and the third time will cost up to $99.
Honolulu’s Mayor Kirk Caldwell spoke out about having to pass that sort of a law.
“Sometimes I wish there were laws we did not have to pass, that perhaps common sense would prevail. But sometimes we lack common sense.”
