Hiking is now the most popular activity for outdoor adventurers according to a report from Adventure Travel Trade Association. Hiking came out on top of other outdoor activities that might be considered a little more adventurous like kayaking mountain climbing.
The last time the report was done was in 2006. At that time people rated their top activities as rock and mountain climbing, rafting, trekking, sea and whitewater kayaking, and canoeing. The 2016 the list looked a bit different with the activities rated as hiking, backpacking, trekking, sea and whitewater kayaking, and rafting.
One of main differences that the researchers found for people’s change in interests is that more people are ranking personal transformation as a reason for doing something. The participants listed important factors for adventure travel such as being in a natural environment, learning, meaningful human experiences, and experiencing a new culture.
