Jet Lag can’t be avoided entirely but it helps to know why it happens when you’re trying to reduce it as much as possible. Stanford sleep expert Jamie Zeitzer recently explained that it mostly has to do with our circadian rhythm being thrown off.
“So, light is really the key. It’s not only the amount of light, it’s also the timing of the light. So, if you are going east-to-west you’ll want to get evening exposure to light. And if you’re going west to east, you’ll want to get morning exposure to light. That’s the general rule of thumb.”
To monitor your natural circadian rhythm you can use apps such as Entrain. With the app you can record your natural habits and then it will offer you tips for aligning to the time zone in your new destination.
