Interplanetary travel is in our not too far off future if Elon Musk has anything to do with it. The billionaire entrepreneur and inventor recently announced to not only send people to live on Mars, but his plans for the spaceship that is going to make it all possible.
Elon spoke at the 67th International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he explained his plan. One of his companies called Space-X has the technology to build a spaceship that would be able to self fuel mid flight and send 100 to 200 people to Mars in somewhere between 80 and 100 days of travel time.
He’s confident that this will possible within ten years of time, and thinks that they should be able to colonize Mars and create a self sustainable community for about a million people.
Right now the cost to do such a thing would be too hefty to actually make happen, but he thinks eventually a ticket to Mars could get down to about $200,000. Still a bit hefty for most people surely, but then again the risk of not surviving the first missions are quite high so anyone who’s making the decision to go would have to be taking the opportunity quite seriously.
