Egypt is hoping to revive the popularity of its river cruising past to put a boost in the tourism industry. The country’s tourism has been suffering due to dangers in the country, and recent terrorist attacks haven’t helped.
The tourism numbers in Egypt actually dropped in half from 2015 to 2016. The numbers of cruise ships also dwindled from over 280 to a few dozen in 2011, but the country thinks that they can get back to those numbers they once enjoyed.
While they have been a number of attacks on churches that are popular tourist spots in Egypt, the river cruises have not been targeted. Since 2011 Egypt has tried increasing security at not only the airports but also ancient sites that are popular with tourist and actual cruise lines as well.
The cruise industry in Egypt really began back in 1870 when Thomas Cook was allowed to start operating, and some of the first guidebooks about travel that were ever published were about cruising the Nile.
