According to a recent report, a passenger plane in London just missed colliding with a drone while flying near one of the city’s largest skyscrapers. The incident happened in July but the report was not released until this week.
Apparently the plane was getting ready for its descent into Heathrow airport when the drone was spotted. The pilot said the collision risk was “high,” that “crew members agreed that this incident appeared to be a very near-miss and that the drone operator should not have been flying in that location at that altitude.”
The plane was flying at 4,900 feet at the time, and they did not find out who was operating the drone. They also added that this was “a situation where a collision had only been narrowly avoided and chance had played a major part.”
There are reportedly dozens of these types of near misses reported each month to the UK Airport Board.
