The China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation has launched a crowdfunding campaign in efforts to save the Great Wall of China and make sure that it gets the restoration it needs to remain standing.
The crowdfunding for the project initially opened at the end of August and has raised about $45,000 so far thanks to over 16,000 people. Their goals are much higher however, with hopes to pull in $1.7 million by the beginning of December.
The man in charge of the project, Dong Yaohui, is clear about the fact that saving the wall will require the efforts of a lot more people than just the official government.
“By pooling the contribution of every single individual, however small it is, we will be able to form a great wall to protect the Great Wall.”
All of the money earned will be used to restore a section of the wall called Xifengkou which runs through a reservoir. Apparently one third of the 3883 mile long foundation of the wall has already disappeared and will continue to do so if some efforts to stop it aren’t put into place.
Some of the wall was first built over 2,000 years ago, but most of what is seen today was built during the Ming Dynasty around 1368-1644 AD.
