Beijing has issued a red alert on account of the rising smog issues. The alert is said to be removed on Wednesday, but the businesses and schools that have been closed because of it might continue to remain closed. More than 100 flights have also been canceled due to reduced visibility.
The red alert for smog is issued either after four consecutive days of poor air quality, or where the air quality index exceeds 500, and it’s the highest level in their system of warnings. On Tuesday evening the air quality reached 387.
There is nothing that can be done to clear the smog besides wait for some wind to come along and do it, as well as prevent creating anymore pollution. Most of it is attributed to the coal that is burned in the winter to stay warm. They have shut down 700 plants and asked 500 to slow production.
In the meantime, people are urged not to workout or spend unnecessary time outside of the house.
