Most beaches are pretty beautiful in one way or another, but for some beaches the sand is actually the main attraction.
Best Pink Sand Beach
Pantai Merah on the Komodo Island of Indonesia is more frequently referred to as Pink Beach and for good reason. The sand is pink colored from the mixture of normal white sand with broken down red coral. It’s one of seven pink sand beaches in the world.
Best Black-sand Beach
The Pailoa Beach in Maui, Hawaii has black sand that was formed by small black rocks. The beach is great for a photo but less so for swimming, thanks to a strong tide and lots of jellyfish.
Best Green Sand Beach
There are only four green sand beaches in the world, one of which is Papakolea Beach in Hawaii. Mahana Beach as it’s generally called, has green sand from a silicate deposit called olivine crystals. Getting to the beach requires a five-mile roundtrip hike.
Best Red Sand Beach
Kaihalulu Beach in Maui, Hawaii is one of the more impressive red sand beaches out there. The sand is made up of red and black lava cinders, and with a hard to find location it’s generally not super packed with people.
