The first airline to announce basic economy fares was United Airlines, and now American Airlines has joined them on that path as well. American will start offering the fares comes February 10 in certain markets with plans to keep expanding the offer.
The basic economy fare offers a zero thrills option for the lowest possible price. People flying under the option may only bring a single carry on bag on board and won’t get any access to the overhead compartment. It’s not possible to upgrade from the standard offers, and there are no seat assignments in advance.
The American Airlines President Robert Isom said released a statement about the decision.
“American Airlines now has something to offer every customer, from those who want simple, low-price travel to those who want an ultra-premium experience via First Class. Importantly, this new fare product also gives American the ability to compete more effectively with the growing number of ultra low-cost carriers.”
