Ireland’s Shannon Airport is the first airport in Europe to create a supportive environment for people with autism and other “neurodevelopmental challenges.” They opened a room near departures that allows autistic people to take part in some calming activities.
Niall Maloney, the Director of Operations at the airport spoke out about the new addition during the opening ceremony.
“I’m both delighted and proud that an Irish airport, Shannon Airport, is the first to introduce a sensory room in Europe. It’s in keeping with Shannon’s special reputation for looking after its passengers. The introduction last year of its hats and wristbands program and the addition this year of the sensory room is our way of showing our support for our customers with autism and special needs.”

Several other airports around the world have already opened quiet rooms and adopted measures that allow people with disorders to get extra help if needed.
