Most of the lighting on airplanes is relatively soft light which is completely intentional. Softer lighter light helps to keep people relaxed mid flight which is preferable to any alternative options.
Now more airplanes are looking into options such as incorporating LED lights, which have more options and last longer.
Nik Lusardi, the design manager at Virgin Atlantic Airways spoke out about this concept.
“We’ve always wanted to create a different kind of atmosphere aboard our aircraft and light plays exactly into our hands. You can get people energized or you can relax people very, very quickly.”
Some LED lights have the capacity to create 16.7 million different colors, which would provide a lot of different mood options. Some airlines are considering creating lighting that would make people feel more refreshed after their flight, as opposed to simply calm during it.
Some researchers at Stanford have already come up with ways to mimic different times of day to make transitions across continents are different time zones that much easier.
