When the feeling of wanderlust kicks in, it might be tempting to choose a random destination on the globe and head out on an amazing adventure. Of course, we want you to have a good time wherever you end up, but there are some countries that are considered dangerous for Americans to visit. This information is based on the U.S. Department of State’s data from the years 2009-2016 that compiled a list of the number of Americans killed in these dangerous countries. We’ve also included some pertinent information from the United State government’s travel advisories.
Here are the 20 countries Americans might want to think twice about visiting.
One country that’s always in the news for its violent acts is Mexico. An astonishing 598 deaths were reported during the period from 2009-2016, primarily in areas where crime syndicates are more active. But in recent years, tourist destinations have also been targeted for major crimes.
In 2017, the Mexican government raided 31 resorts and hot spots in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Over 10,000 gallons of tainted alcohol was seized after numerous tourists experienced blackouts after taking a few sips of their drinks, and a 20-year-old Wisconsin girl was found dead after taking one shot of alcohol.
The U.S. government also warns of gun battles between rival games and criminal organizations that sometimes take place in broad daylight. Although there are no reports of tourists being targeted in these attacks, all it takes is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time for something terrible to happen.
