A landslide has covered a quarter mile of Highway 1 near Big Sur, and the damage could potentially alter the coastline. The area of highway that was covered in the landslide had already been closed down for repairs, and the work crew had been pulled from repairs due to instability in the area.
According to California Department of Transportation spokeswoman Susana Cruz the landslide occurred Saturday night in Mud Creek. The slide sent one million tons of rock and dirt down the hill and onto the highway, piling up 40 feet high in some areas.
Since the slide officials have been limited in how much they can find out. Suzana explained further.
“We haven’t been able to go up there and assess. It’s still moving. We have geologists and engineers who are going to check it out this week to see how do we pick up the pieces.”
