The Taj Mahal is reportedly going to get a cleaning to help remove some of the discoloration it has experienced due to pollution and insects over the years. It’s undergone a variety of restoration treatments, but now it will get a mud pack cleaning to make it look fresher.
The monument was built back in the 17th century and sees as many as eight million visitors each year. The Archaeological Survey of India has said that the cleaning efforts should not be a deterrent to guests.
“A small portion of one side is covered and cleaned, then we move on to the next portion. So the entire monument won’t ever close. It will be open as normal for tourists.”
The work will not begin until the end of the year. The process requires using a clay to get the dirt and grime off, but the clay dries too quickly in the summer months to make it effective. Once the clay dries it is washed away with water. The cleaning process is crucial for keeping the building in good condition for years to come.
