A Swiss restaurant called Löscher is now offering cooking classes that focus on making meals with insects.
The restaurant’s manager Andrea Staudacher spoke out about why.
“We associate prawns with food but not grasshoppers. However the two animals are very similar. A handful of crickets provides the same amount of protein as a piece of beef steak.”
In addition to grasshoppers, they also use flour worms in their muffins and falafel. The worms are specifically bred to be eaten.
While eating insects still seems a little odd in some areas of the world, it’s quite common in others and has been a part of human history for the past 10,000 years that we know of. The United Nations encourages insect consumption based on its high protein content and ease of accessibility for cheap prices.
