A recent report published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports states that coral bleaching is becoming a bigger issue for the reefs. The bleaching is caused by polluted water, and it often comes before the coral starts to die. The report suggested that if nothing changes that 99 percent of the reefs could be bleached by the end of the century.
The study’s co-author Gabby Ahmadia is a marine scientist at the World Wildlife Fund. She spoke out about the need for change.
“We are going to need to be much more innovative and proactive if we want to see coral reefs thrive into the next century. Conventional conservation is not going to cut it against the impacts of climate change.”
Last year the coral reefs had an extreme amount of die off due to El Nino.
