The Marble Caves of Chile have the effect of looking marbelized, which is enhanced by the reflections from the blue and green water of Carrera Lake. Their pattern is the result of 6,000-plus years of waves washing up against calcium carbonate.
The area is not accessible by car at all so seeing it must be done by boat. Visitors can take a 30-minute ferry ride from Chile Chico to see the caves, or they can kayak through the area when the water is calm for a unique experience of viewing the natural wonder.
The area could potentially be damned up so the viewing time might be limited. The easiest way to access the caves from the Santiago area is to fly to Balmaceda, and then continue a four drive on the Carretera Austral. Eventually one would reach the town of Puerto Tranquilo where there are boat options for hitting the caves.
