The CEO of Ryanair has a plan for making flights free of charge within the next ten years, and the concept is not as crazy as it sounds.
Ryan thinks that if the airport restaurants and stores shared a portion of their profit with the airlines, then the airlines wouldn’t have to charge for flights at all. He thinks that this model would increase the amount of traffic that airports currently get, which would increase the overall amount of money being spent.
Of course, this would require that the restaurants and stores be willing to part with some of their profits, and they would all have to be confident that they were getting enough customers to make it worthwhile. But Ryan did seem to think that this could work out well for smaller airports around the world.
“The flights will be full, and we will be making our money out of sharing the airport revenues, of all the people who will be running through airports, and getting a share of the shopping and the retail revenues at airports.”
